NatHERS

The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) provides a framework that allows various computer software tools to rate the potential energy efficiency of Australian homes through Thermal Performance Assessments. NatHERS defines the minimum set of information that must be used by all software tools.

A NatHERS Thermal Performance Assessment or Thermal Comfort Assessment promotes better design and building practices, it helps designers and builders plan and construct homes that are more energy efficient. These homes work with the climate to ensure they naturally exchange heat with the environment which can then minimise the homes heating and cooling energy requirements.

According to the Building Code of Australia (BCA) a minimum standard for energy efficiency of new homes must be met in order to meet the compliance with the requirements of the BCA. In NSW, BASIX regulations override the requirements of the BCA for energy efficiency of new homes. The BASIX online tool accepts NatHERS rating results when derived from accredited software tools and performed by an accredited assessor.

Taylor Smith Consulting only uses second generation software tools and we currently have nationwide accreditation using AccuRate to complete residential building Thermal Performance Assessments throughout Australia.

Our energy efficiency and building sustainability services are provided by suitably qualified industry professionals. Our services can all be provided online and via email and all architectural plans can be stamped electronically for a seamless service.

The NatHERS administrator sets guidelines for the information which must be contained on the client’s final architectural plans. A cross reference is also attached to plans by your energy assessor.

Plans required: Site Plan, Floor Plans, Elevations and Sections (with noted scale used).

Plans must include the following information to be assessed for thermal performance:

  • True North and relationship of building to True North
  • Lot size in square metres (m2)
  • Overshadowing: location and height forms of buildings, fences, landforms, and established trees
  • Shading structures: size, location and coefficient for eaves, pergolas and verandas
  • Construction materials: external walls, internal walls, roof, ceiling and floor type and floor coverings
  • External colours of walls and roof material (light, medium or dark)
  • Height and width of all glazing, type of glass, frame material and sash type, size and position
  • External window covers and shadow coefficient such as awnings, shutters and louvers
Important:

  • Plans must provide a space 120mm wide x 180mm deep (preferably on the front sheet) for your Assessors Thermal Specification block to be inserted and stamped.
  • Plans must have the applicant's name, building address, Lot number, site number and DP (Deposited Plan number), local council and postcode noted in the title block on each page.
  • We base the assessment on the following inclusions: weather seals to windows and doors, draught sealed skylights, vents, exhaust fans, down lights and fireplaces. We must be advised if this is not the case.
